Ok, I’m at the gym. Now what should I actually do???
Every wondered whether you should spend more time on the elliptical or jump on a weight machine instead?
You think all of the balance and stretching exercises are pointless?
Confused about whether you should do 50 crunches (because each rep isn’t too bad) or 15 leg lifts (because each rep is torture)?
There’s a ton of info out there about what type of exercise is the most effective, and there’s no one answer about the type of the exercise you should do. However, one thing is clear:
You need a well-rounded exercise routine to get the best results.
It’s just like your diet. We all want the cabbage soup/pepper-lemon juice/one-type-of-food solution but we really need a well-balanced diet. Everything else is either unsustainable or just plain unhealthy.
Fitness is the same. By only focusing on cardio for weight loss, for example, you lose a lot of muscle. Well, that sucks because it actually makes you appear to be more overweight since you will lack definition. It also leads to worse long-term effects because muscles just make everything easier (something as simple as getting out of a chair or walking for a long distance is so much easier with more muscle).
Check out this inographic on the 5 Different Types of Exercise. These are your main areas of fitness and exercises usually fit into one or more of these buckets. The next time you’re doing an exercise, think, “Why am I doing this exercise?” It will help save you a lot of time and will make your fitness routines a lot more effective.
