Teyana Taylor gave us ALL of the reasons to be in the gym at the VMA’s last night. It was only last year that I was talking about J. Lo and her booty at the Grammy’s. Now, our bodies have a new thing to aspire to be.
Apparently, Miss Taylor is spreading LIES that she eats whatever she wants and is barely working out. (No proof that these are lies – perhaps I’m just hating?) A body like that just can’t come about from lack of effort. Maybe it does…but let’s assume it’s not that easy (because you probably wouldn’t be reading and I probably wouldn’t have a blog, right?)
While she doesn’t necessarily spend hours at the gym each day, or eat rabbit food, I do think that there are some things in her life that completely contribute to her having the body she has. Some of these things are doable for us pure mortals – some are not. Either way, here are 10 reasons why I think Teyana Tayor is fit.
1. She dances all the time
Dancing is real. I used to regularly attend hip-hop, ballet, and African dance classes, and I really do feel like those were some of the best workouts I’ve ever gotten. I think some of the magic is that you’re focused on being artistic, and the fitness comes secondary. So, you enjoy it more and burn calories without even realizing it. Even if dancing isn’t your thing, the lesson here is that she does something that works for her that she loves plus it does her body several favors. So, if you hate P90X, the stupid spinning class that you keep attending, Zumba, or whatever else makes you dread the gym, find yourself something that you love and screw the boring stuff.

THE video…in case you missed it (or want to watch it for the thousandth time). Even though this looks hard as hell, she looks like she’s loving it.
2. Donuts may be involved, but she is likely very conscious about what she eats
I find it hard to believe that she eats whatever she wants. Most likely, she has been very conscious about food for a long time, and now does it naturally.
If you missed my post about 4 habits of fit people, check that out for how this works in real life. I can completely see Teyana being the friend that splits meals and knows the calorie count in her favorite happy hour drink.
3. Iman Shumpert is an athlete…so he’s likely pretty fit
Her man is an athlete, and therefore athletic (deep). This means they are probably both pretty damn healthy as a couple. I have a girlfriend that will only date men that are very serious about working out. It may sound obsessive, but it’s important to have a significant other that gives a crap about their body if that’s something that you want to make a priority. Now, the cool thing about this is that you can always start this healthy journey with bae, so even if he/she is a total slob, there’s still room to grow.
4. She makes time in her life for fitness
And by “make time” I might mean “has time”, since her career demands that she stays fit and she doesn’t have the life and job demands that many of us have. But there’s a good lesson here: no matter how you try to cut corners, if you don’t make time for being healthy, it won’t happen. At some point, some other things may have to take a backseat, so you can get your body, mind, and health to their full potential. We’re all short on time, but if you truly want to be fit and healthy, you find time in your day to make it work.No matter how you try to cut corners, if you don't make time for being healthy, it won't happen.Click To Tweet
5. We can’t ignore the natural hair
I made the point in a previous post that for some of us, our hair is holding us back from meeting our fitness goals. Now, natural hair doesn’t mean that your hair just magically falls in place, but it might mean that you don’t have to be as concerned about sweating, and that’s one less thing to worry about at the gym. Teyana rocks some fly hairstyles from curly, to short, to bold – and I can’t imagine that it’s getting in the way of her fitness life one bit.
6. Genetics likely play a role
Much of her fit figure has to do with the fact that she sort of won the genetic lottery, and well…that’s just how it is sometimes. Even if the genetic lottery for you doesn’t mean having a default fit body, it could mean being very driven and goal-oriented, which could make you a beast in the gym. Or perhaps you’re creative in the kitchen and can make yummy healthy meals. There’s likely a gene in your body that is your own secret sauce to being incredibly healthy. You just have to tap into it.
In her words:
I do the lazy workouts. Even squats hurt for me. I ain’t gonna front. I was 6 years old with a six pack. I was one of those brolic little kids. Once I got older I realized, ‘OK, this is not going anywhere.’ My arms are already kind of naturally brolic, so I try to work on the things that I want more toned.

8. Let’s not pretend that money doesn’t play a part
Listen. I’m not at all making the statement that you need to have money to eat healthy and stay active. However, we do have to acknowledge an unfortunate truth: obesity and poverty are definitely related. The pure density of Popeye’s Chicken and fried fish joints in lower income neighborhoods is enough to prove that point.
Teyana made her fame debut through an episode of My Sweet Sixteen, is boo-ed up with an NBA player, and probably has a record advance situation that makes it possible to have a a fit-glam squad. So, just like many others with money, health is not an issue. That doesn’t mean that that any of us have an excuse if you don’t have money – it’s just a point that needs to be stated. The internet makes everything possible though. There are all types of free workouts on YouTube and FitBlender and meal planning sites like Eat This Much. So even with no money, we have no excuse.
9. Her style is amazingly dope
I mean, Dope comes in all shapes and sizes, so don’t take this statement too literally. But, one thing I appreciate about Teyana when I tune into her IG or Snap channel is that she looks like she’s having fun. I would say that this was a big reason why we loved the music video too – she just oozes life and happiness. Her clothes, hair, makeup, everything are constantly on point and reflect a true personal sense of style. She also seems to have a lot of fun with her girlfriends and Iman.
Physical health is one thing, but mental health is everything. If you’re fit but miserable, what’s the point? I sometimes get to this point, and will even abort working out for a hot second if that’s what I need mentally.
10. She had a baby in her early 20’s
I’ve seen some pretty annoying comments online around this particular topic. A lot of
resentful moms are not feeling the fact that Teyana has a body that they never had, and now the new excuse is that she had a baby in her 20’s. (But seriously, most of these people didn’t even have this body at 16 so…) I will give these hating broads the benefit of the doubt however, and acknowledge that yes, it is easier to have the snapback when you have kids earlier due to shear metabolism alone. Does that mean that those of us with babies later in life have no hope? Um, no. It just means we have a little more motivation to get the pre-baby bodies back.
No really. @TEYANATAYLOR snap back post baby is all the motivation needed. If she can do THAT after a baby, I can put down the burrito

So here we are. Broke, not famous, fat boyfriend, preggo in our 30’s….and every other thing that Teyana is NOT about in life!
Trust me – the point of this post is not that she’s in a better position and we can’t be there. I personally only check half of these boxes and I manage to be pretty fit….I might need to get a few more under my belt to be Teyana Fit though.
These are just some ideas that go with our new mantra of #teyanataylorgoals. Perhaps we won’t do all of the things this girl does, and we won’t have a body exactly like hers. Either way, you gotta appreciate a gorgeous body when you see it, and in whatever way you can do it, allow stuff like this to motivate you even more.
