I love to find myself a new black voice in pretty much any genre, and it’s SUPER refreshing to find them in fitness. It’s not like you have to follow a black fitness blog to find the right type of advice, but you know…we just have a perspective that’s nice to hear sometimes. Plus, we talk about things that non bloggers of color might not ever think about like not working out because of our hair, our obsession with Teyana Taylor, and trap music.
One of my favorite references for bloggers of color in general is Quirky Brown Love’s 200+ Amazing Black Bloggers. I go back to this list all the time to find new black bloggers and have found some pretty amazing ones. Here’s my own (drastically smaller and much more specific) list of black fitness blogs that I love.
If you know nothing about these blogs, allow me to put you on.
I mean, if I’m gonna do a list, I’m gonna do it right and rep my own blog 🙂
My Spin: Real talk fitness. I started the blog talking the same hoop-la you get on a lot of other blogs, until I realized I’m way too lazy and wine-obsessed to be extra hardcore about fitness. So, I talk about things that keep me motivated and speak the truth about when I’m just not feeling it.
My Favorite Thing About the Site: Because I’m just that damn awesome. Next.
Her Spin: Erika has been in the blog game for a while, and she has shared so much along the way. She’s also a mommy and has managed to lose a ton of weight while balancing everything else in life. Most of her blog has been dedicated to the journey from having a first baby, and she had another one a little over a year ago so it’s interesting to see her go through the journey again.
My Favorite Thing About the Site: Since her site has gained in popularity, she pumps out a lot of content so her site serves as a nice little fitness-focused media outlet.
Her Spin: Josie is a mommy and has gone through a really awesome transformation. Since she lives a life of balance and has come such a long way, she offers a realistic perspective on living a healthy lifestyle as a regular ass human being. Oh – and she is not ashamed to say she eats her fair share of junk food. My kind of girl.
My Favorite Thing About the Site: She has so much personality! It’s fun to read her blogs and follow her YouTube channel. I love a person that keeps me entertained and informed at the same time.
Her Spin: Diatta has built a huge tribe (join her Facebook group – you won’t regret it) and is very genuine in all of her product reviews, blog posts, and advice. She also just became a personal trainer and offers that as a service.
My Favorite Thing About the Site: She’s got a lot of good variety and posts a lot of stuff between her blog, FB group, YouTube channel and social media. So, there’s always something fresh to learn.
Her Spin: Danielle recently went through a site transformation where she went from the Fitness Fashionista to Fit Life Creative. With that change, she’s focusing more on the creative side where she does a lot of fitness printables and graphics. She also talks about blogging and general business stuff, so her site goes beyond fitness.
My Favorite Thing About the Site: You walk away from her site with not only great information, but tools to help you along your journey. I’m not a huge planner person, but I do sometimes like to use printables to keep me on track.
Their Spin: It’s a running group that’s focused on encouraging black girls to…well…run! They have running groups across the country and host national events around running. In the few years they’ve been around, they’ve managed to build a huge following and have definitely encouraged more women of color to hit the pavement.
My Favorite Thing About the Site: Well, this is twofold. The best thing about the site is access to local running groups. Since this is an article about blogs (and I’m one for structure) the best thing about the blog is that they have different contributors so it’s nice to see different perspectives.
Her Spin: Sheila’s motto is, “You don’t have to spend a lot of money to get in shape.” With all of the expensive diet and fitness options out there, it’s refreshing to have this perspective. Her site also features a lot of giveaways, reviews, and very credible info. She happens to be a personal trainer and a Masters in Exercise Physiology so she knows her stuff.
My Favorite Thing About the Site: Frugality + Fitness are simply 2 very cool things to put together, so I always look forward to hearing what she’s going to say on both of these things.
Her Spin: Artney has a really personable style that makes you want to visit her site on a regular basis and simply makes you want to be her friend. She’s gone through a super impressive weight loss journey and tells us all about her story through tips, recipes, and product reviews.
My Favorite Thing About Her Site: Like I said, she comes across as very genuine and personable, so it’s refreshing to read her posts.
Her spin: Alexis talks about fitness mixed in with an awesome variety of other topics like fitness gear, product reviews, travel, and local stuff to Washington DC. I also think she has the blog name of pretty much any site out there.
My Favorite Thing About the Site: She has a very clear and neat site and writing style. It’s easy to whiz through any of her posts, and she makes them all super enjoyable to read.
Her spin: Janelle is definitely a runner and she has a lot to share in this space. She focuses on fitness in general, and her site is largely focused on race recaps and general running tips. She also tends to link up with a lot of other fitness bloggers so you’re bound to learn about a lot of other good blogs from tuning into her site.
My Favorite Thing About the Site: She has a really good resource page for beginning runners or anyone that wants some general helpful tips on running.
Her spin: This is one of the few fitness sites out there that is a .org, so with that it definitely feels like a site that’s genuinely there to inform. Patricia has a degree in public health so a lot of the info on her site is targeted toward helping women with a lot of the issues that affect our population in general.
My Favorite Thing About the Site: She features a lot of really awesome transformation stories. Read through a few of these and you can’t help but to feel motivated.
Her Spin: Fran contributes to Black Girls Run on a pretty regular basis (that’s how I found her). On her own site, she has a lot of the health and fitness basics that you need to get started with living a healthy life.
My Favorite Thing About Her Site: She has beautiful graphics and a clean site that makes you want to stay and visit.
