Being sick absolutely sucks. I’m specifically talking colds here. I mean, other forms of sickness suck too, but me and colds go back like a bad ex.
I go through phases where it seems like I constantly have a cold. I hate it, especially when it comes to staying fit and working out. You’re miserable, tired, stuck in bed, whining for someone to take care of you…everything sucks. There is really one things you can do at this point to not let Sick completely take you down and sabotage all your health goals:
Get over it as quickly as possible
Fortunately, I haven’t been sick in a long time. Serious kudos to me. My immune system is usually pathetic!
BUT, I want to write about the type of thing I need to hear when I am sick, because you or I may need this in the near future (hopefully not soon for me, seeing how I just completely insulted my immune system.)
I know from several experiences that being sick can completely kill all fitness goals, because who cares about the gym when you feel like crap? But it’s totally avoidable if you can get over it. Here are a few of the best ways to do that.
Don’t leave the house…just stay under a blanket and let things come to you
This is where I need to talk about RobinHealth. This service is amazing. It’s an online pharmacy that makes it super easy to get both prescription and over-the-counter meds. I just used it the other day for some everyday meds, but the first thing that crossed my mind was, “This is about to be my THING when I’m sick.” Here are some deets on how it works:
1. You sign up for the site at JoinRobinHealth.com.
The only info they needed from me to get started was my name, address, payment info, and images of my insurance card.
2. You tell them which medications you need. This part was actually pretty magical. Whenever I order from Walgreens or CVS, I go through hell trying to figure out the freakin RX number. For some reason, RobinHealth didn’t need it! They just called Walgreens based on the drug name I told them, and they had the prescription. Too easy.
3. You tell them when and where you want it delivered. Currently, RobinHealth only services San Francisco (hoping this changes soon!) and I happen to work in the city every now and then, so I had them deliver it to me at work. They deliver within 30 minutes of whatever you tell them so super convenient.
4. They call you when they arrive. They work with Uber for the delivery (and possibly other drivers too), and the prescription itself came from a local pharmacy. The supply chain person in me appreciates the efficiency!
And just like that, you never have to leave home.
This right here is perfect for a sick day in bed.
Medicate, but only with the stuff that works
Secondly, medicate yourself to get over your cold, but only with stuff that’s actually effective.
Again, you can really benefit from a service like RobinHealth because they’ll bring all your meds to you – prescription or not. I personally like to go for some type of sleep-inducing drowsy stuff like NyQuil. I’m not really sure how effective it is with curing a cold (because word on the street is those things can’t be cured) but it knocks me out and sleep is the only happy place when sick.
I also like to take vitamins like echinacea and vitamin C. I’m also not sure whether they do anything when I’m completely sick, but they make things better when I’m starting to get sick, so I figure there’s no harm in taking them to potentially feel better. More on that point in the next section.
I feel like all of the other cold stuff is a little bit of a waste. In all honesty, I actually feel like it makes me feel worse, like it further induces the symptoms to possibly take me through the cold so it goes by faster. That could all be in my head, but either way, not too enthusiastic about about all the other cold meds.
Before it even gets to this point, stop it from happening
Lastly, by all means, prevent it.
It’s a a little too late when you’re sick, but before it even gets to that point, take Airborne. I swear by this stuff! (Even despite the fact that they had a little lawsuit for making claims that it cures the common cold.) I swear it makes your cold completely go away before it even starts. It can sometimes take a few days to get completely over it, but it’s all about consistency.
Also, super easy and so important: stay warm. I have a habit of keeping on my sweaty, cold workout clothes when I’m being lazy. This is like asking for a cold – don’t do it. Keep some dry clothes on you for when you leave the gym. If you’re feeling cold at work or home, put on a put on a sweater. Drink some tea. Do anything to keep your body warm. My mom has always been a fan of wearing hats indoors. This feels a bit excessive, and I also tend to sweat a lot so it’s overkill for me. But hey, if it stops you from getting sick, it could be worth it.
Even when you’re not sick, check out RobinHealth
If you live or work in San Francisco, consider yourself pretty damn lucky to have access to this service. It’s a lifesaver when you’re sick, and it’s also super convenient for your everyday meds.
Aside from that, stay well! Fitness is sooo much easier when you’re not sick 🙂
